mary in the junkyard picks 5 movies to pair with ‘Role Model Hermit’
In Pairings, artists and creators pick the movies that complement their latest work.
mary in the junkyard is an alternative rock band whose debut album Role Model Hermit is out on July 3 wherever you get your music!
We asked the band to pick a few movies that pair well with Role Model Hermit. Here’s what they wrote about them.
Wings of Desire
We all watched Wings of Desire together and most of the dialogue in the film is internal thoughts and feelings. There are angels that watch over everyone and touch them on the shoulder to make them feel better. The way that the angels exist in the film is kinda like how we hope the album could exist in people’s lives. The way the music sounds in the film is perfect.
Where the Wild Things Are
This film has beautiful relationship with monsters and creatures. It really brings out curiosity and childlike wonder. The forest is a great place to be.
Une Femme est une Femme (A Woman is a Woman)
This inspired the blood video. We watched it in New York—it’s very joyful, silly, and playful, which is a feeling we try and live in our lives. The colours are great, and it’s very dramatic but silly at the same time.
Princess Mononoke
The music in this film really shows the power of nature and what happens when nature intervenes to compensate for the failure of human nature. We took inspiration from the emotionally evocative strings.
The Cruise
The Cruise is an amazing documentary about a New York tour guide who has a philosophy of freedom and interacting with the city as if it’s a living thing. He’s such an incredible and inspiring ball of energy, and the film itself is a great example of DIY filmmaking. The specificity and intensity of his passion for small things is something we tried to do on the album. You can bring so much more joy into your life if you open yourself up to the beauty of everything around you.
