We asked Jilian to pick a few movies that pair well with Shiverstruck. Here’s what she wrote about them.
The Wedding Singer
An absolute classic in my book. Sandler at his best. A movie about romanticizing people who absolutely do not deserve it and making spectacularly bad decisions in the name of love… and somehow still believing in happy endings. This movie always makes me cry. Why is it the sweetest thing ever!
Ratatouille
The thing you’re meant to do, you will do. No matter how impractical or far fetched it seems. I think I watched this like 3 times during the making of Shiverstruck. Anytime I found myself on a plane or a night in with nothing to watch I put it on. I love every single character! Ratatouille reminds me of my dog Blueberry.
Fallen Angels
The feeling of wandering through a city at 3 AM convinced everyone else has it all figured out. This movie taps into a feeling of isolation and despair that I sometimes felt living in New York. But on the other hand those emotions also made me feel so alive. Wong Kar-wai is one of my favorite filmmakers ever. Every movie has such a unique and strange sense of human connection and he’s always been a big inspiration for my music videos as well.
Sentimental Value
This movie really holds a light to the strange weight objects, memories and old versions of ourselves carry. The kind of movie that reminds you you’re still dragging things from your past into the next phase of your life and it’s OK to let them go. The only Letterboxd review I ever wrote was for this movie because I was so in awe. I had snot pouring out of my nose from how hard I was crying. It made me feel many many things.
Ghost World
Gahhh I’ll always love this one. It’s for anyone who’s ever felt slightly out of sync with the rest of the planet. I love this movie cuz it’s funny, awkward, cynical but also really tender and sweet. Makes me want to live in my own world and write songs forever.
