Last weekend we took our Pairings feature on the road to the Evanston Folk Festival, a joyous two-day celebration of folk music on the shores of Lake Michigan. Here’s our correspondents Gaby Rosales and Kaitlyn Hannemann on their takeaways from the experience.
One of the coolest parts of the festival was seeing people of all ages connecting over the same thing: a love of music. Folk music has always carried ideas of kindness, openness and acceptance, and you could genuinely feel that spirit in the crowd. Seeing the charities and community organizations supported by the festival was also a great reminder that an event like this can do some real good.
From the stages to the art installations scattered across the grounds, the whole festival felt like a celebration of people making and sharing things. But more than anything, Evanston Folk Fest felt like a celebration of community—a place where people could enjoy great music, express themselves, and feel like they were part of something.
