Leenalchi picks 4 movies to pair with ‘Here Comes That Crow’

In Pairings, artists and creators pick the movies that complement their latest work.

Jang Young-gyu is the bassist of the South Korean pansori pop band Leenalchi, whose new EP Here Comes That Crow is out on June 12 wherever you get your music!

We asked the band to pick a few movies that pair well with Here Comes That Crow. Here’s what Jang Young-gyu wrote about them.

Red Cliff (2008)

The film that directly contains the source narrative of There Goes the Crow. The pansori Jeokbyeokga retells the Battle of Red Cliff through the lens of common people, laced with Korean wit and humor. This is the most direct entry point for understanding where Leenalchi’s classical roots and modern rhythm converge.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Strangeness, raw energy, the relentless momentum of bodies moving together. This film pushes forward on sensation before explanation — and that driving force feels remarkably close to the kind of impact Leenalchi’s music delivers.

The Birds (1963)

Anxiety seeping into the everyday without reason, the arrival of a force that cannot be controlled. Much like the crow’s dual nature as both omen of good and ill, Hitchcock’s film confronts fear that refuses to be explained.

No Man’s Land (2001)

Death has already drawn near, but has not yet arrived. Even so, people argue, talk, and endure. In the most extreme of circumstances, the rhythm of life persists — the same coexistence of gravity and dark humor that lies at the heart of pansori.
